Ottawa rent report

A paid report on the rents that renters in the City of Ottawa reported to FairRent.

Can it be delivered today?

A paid report cannot be delivered yet, and this is why: the licence for rent submissions from renters rests on the terms of use and has not yet been settled for paid use; no signed disclosure review covers this release. This is a decision FairRent has to record before it can sell; there is no date yet.

While this is so, FairRent records each request and answers it, but sends no invoice.

What the report is

It describes the rents that renters in the City of Ottawa reported: by number of bedrooms, by when renters moved in, by area where the numbers allow it, and beside CMHC and Statistics Canada figures.

Each result says how strong the evidence is and what it cannot tell you. A group too small to publish is left out, never estimated. We do not publish a figure drawn from fewer than 5 submissions, and counts are shown as bands rather than exact numbers.

It is built only from rent submissions sent under a notice that named paid reports. Earlier submissions are left out, and so are rooms, listings and submissions waiting for review.

Renters report their own rent. We check submissions for quality, but an accepted submission does not prove that a lease was verified or that it comes from a separate household.

Naming a source does not mean it endorses or partners with FairRent.

Who it is for

FairRent may sell reports and access to grouped rent statistics to governments, public agencies, unions and universities for approved work that supports renters. The work must support renters, and FairRent decides whether it does.

FairRent sells it under the rules of our promise to renters:

  • We do not sell reports, data or private access to landlords, property managers or anyone acting for them.
  • We do not allow our paid reports or data to be used for pricing rental homes, planning rent increases, screening tenants, identifying renters or targeting evictions.
  • We never sell individual rent submissions.

An eligible institution with a purpose these rules exclude is still refused.

Price

Price on request, invoiced.

An edition is the report as of one data cutoff: its figures come only from rent submissions received before that date. FairRent can cut a new edition each week. FairRent can also rebuild an edition: a rebuild reads the same submissions again, so it picks up a withdrawal or a correction and nothing received after the cutoff, and your code opens the newest version of your edition. A later edition has a later cutoff and is a new purchase.

An access code opens one edition of the Ottawa report: the edition it was issued for, until it expires or is revoked. No code opens every edition.

FairRent sends an invoice only after deciding that a request is eligible. Nothing is charged on this site.
