About Fair Rent Canada

Fair Rent Canada is a free rent comparison tool built for Canadian renters. It combines official data from CMHC and Rentals.ca with anonymous submissions from real renters to estimate fair rent at the neighbourhood level. Instead of one number, you get a range with a confidence score so you know how reliable the estimate is.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fair Rent Canada free to use?

Yes. Completely free. No account required, no email address collected, no personal information stored.

Which cities does Fair Rent Canada cover?

We currently cover Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver, with neighbourhood-level data for each city. More cities will be added as renter data grows.

How are rent estimates calculated?

We start with CMHC's annual Rental Market Survey and Rentals.ca's monthly reports, then blend in anonymous rent submissions from other renters in your area. Your result is a range with a confidence score, not a single number.

Is my submission anonymous?

Yes. We do not collect your name, email, IP address, or any identifying information. We store only your neighbourhood, unit type, monthly rent, and move-in year.

Can I use this in a rent dispute?

No. This tool provides general market estimates only. It is not legal advice and should not be used in formal rent dispute proceedings. For legal help, contact a licensed paralegal or your provincial tenant rights organization.
